Gifts Worth Giving: A Guide to Thoughtful Gifting

A meaningful gift is one that is used often, made with care, and carries a story that resonates. The gifts people remember are rarely the most expensive; they are the ones that become part of daily life, a cushion leaned against every evening, a coaster under every morning cup, each one a small reminder of the person who chose it.

This time of year has always felt to me like one long season of sharing. Growing up in Mumbai, it meant sweets carried between neighbours, homes opened to visitors, and small gifts exchanged across festivals of many faiths. And in London, it means candlelit tables, long dinners, and the quiet pleasure of choosing something for someone you know well. The occasions differ from one city to the next, but the instinct is the same everywhere: to give something that says I thought of you.

How this guide came about

When Arpita from Slow Earth Studio and I first designed these pieces, gifting wasn't something we had in mind. We were thinking about the objects themselves: a motif that could hold the eye, embroidery that felt right on natural cotton, a coaster that turned setting down a cup into a small moment. We imagined them living in our customers' homes.

Then the early feedback began to arrive, and a surprising amount of it said the same thing: that our pieces make a thoughtful gift. People told us about a cushion bought for a friend's new flat, coasters carried to a dinner party, a tote chosen for someone who loves design. I think the reason is simple. Every design begins with a story, and a story is something you can pass on along with the object.

So, taking our customers' lead, I have put together a few gifting ideas for every kind of person on your list.

For the host

If you are heading to someone's home this season, bring something for the table rather than something to be put away. The Jardin Nar Embroidered Cotton Tablemats & Napkins (set of 2 for £30) pair an embroidered pomegranate motif with printed floral napkins on natural cotton. The pomegranate has stood for abundance and generosity across many cultures for centuries, which makes it a fitting thank-you to someone who has fed you well.

Bombay Deco Mixed Design Gold-finished Coaster (Set of 4)
£50.00

The Design

A quiet dialogue between eras, where the playful geometry of Bombay's Art Deco meets the soft, sweeping arches of Rajput and Mughal architecture. This set of mix designs brings together four distinct expressions of that dialogue, scalloped arches, interlocking diamonds, radiating fans, and layered geometric lines, each a different verse in the same architectural story.

The Product

This printed aluminium coaster is produced on brushed gold aluminium dibond, its gold-finished surface catching light with a subtle metallic sheen. Waterproof, durable, and quietly architectural in every detail. A set of 4 decorative coasters, made with precision in Germany.

For a host who loves design, the Bombay Deco Gold-finished Coasters (set of 4 for £50) bring the geometry of Mumbai's Art Deco and the arches of Rajput and Mughal architecture onto brushed gold aluminium. They are useful from the first evening and quietly beautiful every day after.

For someone who carries their day with them

A tote is one of the most used objects anyone owns, which makes it one of the most remembered gifts. The Bombay Deco Cotton Studio Tote (£25) is printed in unique colours on natural cotton, and the embroidered Atelier Tote Bags in Jardin Nar, Baadiyah, and Blu Pietra (£35 each) carry a motif to the market, the office, or the library. Natural cotton softens with every use, so the gift gets better the more it is carried.

For a home being made

For someone who has moved house, set up their first flat, or is slowly making a space their own, a pair of cushion covers changes how a room feels more than almost anything else at the price. The embroidered cushion covers in Jardin Nar and Baadiyah (set of 2 for £90) and Blu Pietra (set of 2 for £80) are embroidered on natural cotton and made to be leaned against, sat on, and lived with. Baadiyah's tree motifs feel especially right for a new home: something to grow with it.

Blu Pietra Embroidered Cotton Cushion Cover (Set of 2)
£80.00

The Design

Rooted in Mediterranean tradition, this design draws inspiration from sunlit ceramics and coastal tilework. At its heart, a stylised pomegranate, an enduring symbol of abundance and life, anchors the composition with quiet meaning. Flowing vines and floral motifs radiate outward in balanced symmetry, echoing the natural rhythms of sea, sky, and stone.

The Product

This embroidered cotton cushion cover (40×40 cms) is worked on 100% natural cotton with thoughtfully composed threads, fully lined in cotton to protect the embroidery from within and lend each cover a supple, refined finish, adding a touch of colour and enduring charm to lived-in spaces. A set of 2 decorative cushion covers, each made by skilled artisans in India.

Every design is made in a batch of no more than 100 pieces, so when a design sells out, it can take several weeks before the next batch is ready. If you have your heart set on a particular piece for a particular date, it is worth ordering early. We currently ship across the UK, and orders typically arrive within 5 to 10 business days. If something isn't quite right, get in touch within 14 days of receiving your order and we'll do our best to find a solution.

The season of giving and sharing is, in the end, a season of thoughtfulness: noticing what someone loves, what they use, what might make an ordinary day a little better. A gift chosen that way doesn't need to be grand. It just needs to be thought of, and it will carry that thought for years.
